I once collected idioms around my mouth;
Though I'd affixed them to parchment,
my ambition was quite noble.

Writing was not for wealth-
not for reverence of any kind.
It was for the gaiety of released words,
which later flocked together in verse.

I knew I'd never gather riches
of a monetary kind, in lieu
I'd collect winsome treasures
when readers traipsed where my nib once reclined.

"I once collected idioms around my mouth"
If I'd written such a wonderful phrase, I'd be tempted to stop there and call it a poem! You, thank goodness, used it as a foundation on which to erect a fabulous verse, fun to read aloud. Thank you!

Love that last line! It reminds me of how poets and scribes used to use quill and ink and parchment. I think *true* poets write for the sheer joy of writing, not necessarily the monetary gain.

Great opening line--and I loved the use of "reclined" in the last line; so apt yet unexpected. Thanks for sharing this for the rally!
